Description of a new ascaridoid parasite of Bothrops jararaca Wied (Reptilia, Ophidia) in Brazil Zoologia
Siqueira,Liege R.; Panizzutti,Márcia H. M.; Muniz-Pereira,Luís C.; Pinto,Roberto M..
A new species of Ophidascaris Baylis, 1920 is described on the basis of specimens recovered from the pit viper Bothrops jararaca Wied, 1824 in Brazil. The new species referred here was compared to other of the genus that are the closest. The differentiation was based on reliable morphological characters, mainly on what refers to the spicular length, number and distribution of caudal papillae, location of the vulvar opening, eggs size and aspect of the labial indentations. Moreover, female specimens are the only to possess a most prominent and characteristic post-anal tubercle-like structure and when analyzed together with the males, that show a great number of pre-cloacal papillae, the presence of an unpaired papilla and also of a less conspicuous...

First report of a natural helminth infection in the Japanese quail Coturnix japonica Temminck & Schlegel (Aves, Phasianidae, Galliformes) in the neotropical region Zoologia
Pinto,Roberto M.; Menezes,Rodrigo C.; Tortelly,Rogério; Noronha,Dely.
The present findings are related to the report of the first natural helminth infection in the Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica Temminck & Schlegel, 1849 in Brazil. The kidney trematode Tanaisia inopina Freitas, 1951 is referred for the first time in the investigated host.

First report of the digenetic trematode Psilochasmus oxyurus (Creplin) in the domestic goose, Anser anser (Linnaeus) in South America Zoologia
Fernandes,Berenice M. M.; Menezes,Rodrigo C.; Tortelly,Rogério; Noronha,Dely; Pinto,Roberto M..
The digenetic trematode Psilochasmus oxyurus (Creplin, 1835) Lühe, 1909, although with a large geographical distribution, is referred in geese (Anser anser Linnaeus, 1758) for the first time in South America, on the basis of specimens parasitizing Brazilian domestic geese, with a prevalence of 20%. Brief morphometric data on the parasites are included. Clinical signs, gross and microscopic lesions were not observed in the birds.

New host and geographical records for helminths parasites of Ardeidae (Aves, Ciconiiformes) in Brazil Zoologia
Arruda,Vanessa S. de; Pinto,Roberto M.; Muniz-Pereira,Luís C..
One thousand two-hundred-four helminth samples recovered from Brazilian Ardeidae birds during 54 years were studied. Samples consisted of cestodes, trematodes, and nematodes, parasites of egrets and herons. Based on the present results 49 new host and three new geographical distribution records were established.

New records for helminths of hystricognath rodents from the middle and high Rio Negro microregion, State of Amazonas, Brazil Zoologia
Gonçalves,Alessandra Q.; Bóia,Márcio N.; Coura,José R.; Pinto,Roberto M..
Four nematodes and one cestode species from three Brazilian agoutis - two Dasyprocta fuliginosa Wagler, 1832 and one Dasyprocta leporina (Linnaeus, 1758) - and six pacas - Agouti paca (Linnaeus, 1766) - captured in tributaries rivers in the middle and high Rio Negro microregion, State of Amazonas, Brazil, were studied. The nematodes Physaloptera torresi (Travassos, 1920) Ortlepp, 1922, Physocephalus mediospiralis (Molin, 1859) Hall, 1916 and the cestode Raillietina (R.) trinitatae (Cameron & Reesal, 1951) Baer & Sandars, 1956 are reported from the State of Amazonas for the first time. The studied helminths (the nematodes P. torresi, P. mediospiralis, Trichuris gracilis (Rud., 1819) Hall, 1916, Helminthoxys urichi (Cameron & Reesal,...

Trichostrongylina (Nematoda, Heligmosomoidea) coparasites in Dasyprocta fuliginosa Wagler (Rodentia, Dasyproctidae) from Brazil, with the re-establishment of the genus Avellaria Freitas & Lent and the description of two new species Zoologia
Durette-Desset,Marie C.; Gonçalves,Alessandra Q.; Pinto,Roberto M..
Two new tichostrongylid nematodes of the family Viannaiidae Durette-Desset & Chabaud, 1981 coparasites in Dasyprocta fuliginosa Wagler, 1832 from the State of Amazonas, Brazil, are described: Viannella trichospicula sp. nov. is differentiated from the other species of the genus by the extreme slenderness of its spicules. Avellaria intermedia sp. nov. is distinguished from the single type species Avellaria avellari Freitas & Lent, 1934, by a smaller number of cuticular ridges (17 versus 27), a higher ratio of spicule length/ body length (8% versus 5.6%) and spicules with a single tip. This genus, synonymized with the genus Viannella Travassos, 1918, by Durette-Desset (1968) is re-established, the female being didelphic. It is the first...
